The International Air Transport Division of Civil Aviation Bureau at Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has reportedly received new fare applications from 15 to 20 foreign carriers out of 60 after it notified its decision on January 28 to remove the minimum fare restriction of PEX fare in the international air fare from Japan.
The applied fare level seems more or less identical with the ones filed by Japan Air Lines and All Nippon Airways, the contents of which are already made public.
There are no extreme prices seen in the papers but prices below the 70 percent level of the former bottom price are spotted here and there, says a spokesman of the Division.
Airlines are allowed to replace the application in April or later after they study the other carriers' prices. It appears that they are now at the stage of sounding out the moves of competitors.
The spokesman says, "We have not come across outrageous prices yet, but it remains to be seen how things will develop for the second half of the year when demand slackens."
